The monthly number of active Telegram users has exceeded 500 million

In the first week of January, Telegram’s audience exceeded 500 million monthly active users. Over the past three days, 25 million people have joined the messenger. The founder of the social network Pavel Durov told about this in his Telegram channel.

New users joined from all over the world – 38% from Asia, 27% from Europe, 21% from Latin America and 8% from the Middle East and North Africa.

Durov also noted that the growth in the number of users has accelerated significantly compared to last year. Then every day about 1.5 million people were registered. So, in April 2020, Telegram reported 400 million monthly active users.

“People no longer want to trade their privacy for free services. Telegram … has become the largest haven for those looking for a communication platform focused on privacy and security, ”writes Durov.

According to the analyst company Sensor Tower, from January 6 to 10, 2021, Telegram was downloaded 9 million times. This is 91% more than a week earlier. The increase in downloads is due to a change in WhatsApp’s privacy policy, Business Insider notes.

As a reminder, from February, new privacy rules will come into force for everyone who has installed WhatsApp, except for residents of the EU and the UK. Accordingly, user data will be transmitted to Facebook, in particular phone numbers, transactions and IP addresses.

At the same time, the head of WhatsApp, Will Cathcart, assured that after the update of the usage policy, neither WhatsApp nor Facebook will be able to read private chats and listen to calls.

At the end of 2020, Pavel Durov announced paid features in Telegram, which will be launched in 2021. For the channels of the messenger, its own advertising platform will be created.
